China’s Junyu Huang Wins APT National Cup for Career-Best KRW 93.8M (~USD 65.8K)
Junyu Huang claimed his maiden live tournament title in the APT National Cup
The first of the festival’s key events has crowned a champion, with China’s Junyu Huang defeating a 690-entry field to claim a career-best score in the KRW 850,000 (~USD 600) buy-in APT National Cup.
Just 97 players returned for the Final Day to duke it out for the lion’s share of the KRW 486,804,384 (~USD 341,620) prize pool, with all returning players guaranteed a payout of at least KRW 1,340,000 (~USD 940).
While it was India’s Vishal Ojha who returned with the overnight chip lead, the Indian player lost two back-to-back crucial coin flips on the final table to hit the rail in fourth place.
Huang, who came into the nine-handed final table as the sixth-largest stack, played a patient game and picked his spots carefully, avoiding big all-in confrontations to ladder up.
It was only when play became three-handed that Huang began to up the aggression, sending WSOP bracelet winner Qiang Xu to the rail in third place to bring a 3-to-1 chip deficit into the heads-up match against fellow countryman Zu You Wang, who had been dominating the final table action.
The match spanned over a full 30-minute level and a half, with Huang slowly chipping away at his opponent to climb back into contention, before seizing a lead he would not relinquish to claim his maiden live tournament title and a career-best KRW 93,844,384 (~USD 65,855) top prize.
"Winning this championship is honestly quite lucky," stated Huang via the aid of a translator immediately following his win, "It's also a recognition of all the time I’ve spent learning poker along this journey, so I’m really happy.”
While clearly relishing his time in the spotlight, Huang is not getting carried away with his first major score, seeing it more as a learning experience.
“I think it’s important to keep learning, maintain a good mindset, stay focused and patiently wait for opportunities. I think the challenge is controlling impulsive thoughts or irrational decisions – that’s very important,” Huang confided.
Huang also expressed his admiration for the APT.
"APT is one of the largest and most professional tournaments in Asia, with a great organization and venue, so I think APT is the smartest choice within Asia."
Understandably chuffed with his first recorded live victory, Huang is looking forward to getting back to the tournament tables over the next few days.
“Since it’s only Day 2 of the schedule, I’ll probably just have a simple meal and continue playing tomorrow.”
With a further eight days remaining on the schedule, there is still ample opportunity for Huang to further add to his brand new trophy collection, so we could well see more from him during the festival.
While Wang will be disappointed to have been unable to turn his final table dominance into a maiden tournament title of his own, he will not be unhappy with the KRW 57,350,000 (~USD 40,245) runner-up prize, with the result also representing a career-best score for the Chinese player.
Front (L-R): Junyu Huang, Yifei Chen, Vishal Ojha, Wei Hong, Jiaqi He
