Short Deck (Six-Plus)

Short Deck, also known as Six-Plus, is a variation of Texas Hold’em. The betting, structures, and the showdown are all the same as they are in Texas Hold'em with one large twist – 16 cards are removed from the deck. All cards ranked 2 through 5 are removed, leaving the deck with 36. Aces are high and they can still be used to make both the low and the high end of straights. For example, the highest straight is still A-10, but the lowest straight is now 9-A. Because the odds of achieving hands is drastically effected, hand rankings are modified.

Modified Hand Rankings:

In Short Deck, a Flush ranks higher than Full House and a Three of a Kind ranks higher that a straight. See the modified hand rankings below:

A K Q J T Royal Flush
J T 9 8 7 Straight Flush
9 9 9 9 8 Four of a Kind
J J J Q Q Full House
A J T 8 7 Flush
T 9 8 7 6 Straight
7 7 7 K T Three of a Kind
T T 8 8 9 Two pair
Q Q A T 7 One pair
K J T 9 6 - High card

Learning the hand rankings and how to calculate the odds of making your hands takes some getting used to, but take comfort in knowing that all the other rules remain unchanged from Texas Hold’em.
