China’s Siyu Ji Wins APTC Seat & KRW 252.9M (~USD 175K) in Tour’s Richest Korean Zodiac Classic – Sponsored by Natural8

Event #65 Zodiac Classic - Sponsored by Natural8 Siyu Ji 9.JPG Siyu Ji is the tour’s second-ever female Zodiac Classic champion

Following an additional day, the KRW 3.6M (~USD 2,400) Zodiac Classic – Sponsored by Natural8 saw the tournament crown its second-ever female champion.

China’s Siyu Ji triumphed over a field of 426 entries to claim the lion’s share of the KRW 1,325,030,400 (~USD 920,160) prize pool — the richest the tournament has ever generated in the country — after battling back from behind to overcome compatriot Yi Feng Zhang in a lightning-fast five hand heads-up match.

Ji earned a career-best KRW 252,980,400 (~USD 175,680) top prize for her victory — the largest first-place prize this event has awarded in the country.

In addition to her maiden live tournament title, Ji also claimed a KRW 14.4 million (USD 10,000) seat to the tour’s USD 5M GTD season-ending showpiece – the APT Championship (APTC) Main Event running November 13-29 in Taipei, Taiwan.

I still haven’t fully calmed down from the intense and thrilling competition at the table, but I’m really happy right now. I love this Zodiac event trophy so much,” said Ji in Mandarin immediately following her win.

First, let me talk about the final table. Yesterday I was actually very lucky. On Day 2, my cards were incredibly good — basically all big hands.”

When there were seven players left at the final table, I personally eliminated five of them, and at one point almost all the chips were in front of me. The dealer was busy just helping me consolidate my stack. I really thought that day I was going to complete my “number one” mission.”

Fate however, had other plans with Zhang wrestling the chip lead once play reached heads-up before the tournament was stopped at 2:45am (KST), leaving Ji all night to think about her change of fortune.

It felt like fate was testing me. I kept losing all-ins, and the heads-up stacks became 1 to 1.2 — he even had more chips than me. You can’t imagine that feeling, like falling from the top straight down to the bottom. I couldn’t sleep at all that night.”

Fortunately for Ji, despite the insomnia the overnight break allowed her to return refreshed and revitalized, and she quickly turned things around, finding pocket kings in the first hand played to take down the pot pre-flop after a brief betting war with Zhang.

Ji took a 3-to-1 chip lead she would not relinquish the following hand after flopping a flush, closing out the match three hands later.

Luckily today, things turned around. I got three cooler hands and managed to take my opponent out. It was pretty fortunate,” Ji gushed following the match.

If I get the chance to go to the APTC in Taiwan, I’ll definitely go. Even if I don’t, I’ll show up to every APT stop from now on. APT has already become a must-play series for me. Next, I’ll probably try some bigger events with higher buy-ins and keep challenging myself.”

Australia’s Emad Zarghami Wins Tour’s Richest Korean Mini Main Event for KRW 147M (~USD 100K)

Event #72 Mini Main Event Emad Zarghami 5.jpg Emad Zarghami claimed his maiden APT title in the tour’s richest Korean edition of the Mini Main Event

Just 115 players from an initial field of 812 entries returned for the Final Day of the tour’s richest-ever Korean-based KRW 1.2M (~USD 820) Mini Main Event.

All returning players were guaranteed a KRW 1,910,000 (~USD 1,300) share of the KRW 841,881,600 (~USD 574,660) prize pool, but it was the KRW 160,061,600 (~USD 109,260) top prize and coveted Silver Lion Silhouette Trophy that all were aiming for.

It took seventeen full 25-minute levels to reduce the field to the final two players, and then close to a further two 15-minute levels to crown a champion with Australia’s Emad Zarghami cutting a deal with opponent Bowen Xue of China once play reached heads-up.

The duo decided to take some money off the top to guarantee the runner-up a payday of KRW 110,000,000 (~USD 75,085), and then duked it out for a KRW 147,421,600 (~USD 100,630) top prize - in addition to the trophy and title.

It was Zarghami who emerged victorious, with the Aussie claiming his maiden APT title in addition to the largest cash of his poker career. Xue also cashed for a career-best score, as did compatriot and third place finisher Zhili Zhou.

Other notables to make a final table appearance included Hong Kong’s Ka Ho Ip, who was able to turn his start-of-day second largest stack into a fourth place finish and the second-best score of his poker career to date.

While Shuang Bao was unable to convert his start-of-day chip lead into his first tournament title, the Chinese player did cash in fifth place for his second-largest cash, so will not be too disappointed with the result.
