The last of the festival’s record-setting tournaments to play out was also the last of the series’ marquee events, with players battling it out at the baize in an attempt to tame the Rose Gold Lion in the KRW 5M (~USD 3,570) APT High Roller.

Just 68 survivors out of the tour’s largest-ever Korean-based field of 305 entries returned to action for the Final Day, all looking to earn a share of the KRW 1,317,600,000 (~USD 941,140) prize pool – the richest the event has ever generated in the country.

With a top prize of KRW 261,400,000 (~USD 186,715) and an APT Championship Main Event seat valued at KRW 14 million (USD 10,000) for the eventual winner, the competition was fierce.

With only the top 39 places paying out, 29 of the Day 1 survivors would be departing empty handed, with the action recommencing on level 17 with blinds of 6,000/12,000 with a 12,000 running ante.

Event 59: NL Hold’em champion Chon Chan’s exit at the hands of China’s Zhaoyi Lin midway through the level 27 burst the money bubble to guarantee the remaining players a payout of at least KRW 8,990,000 (~USD 6,420).

Chi Ngong Tang returned with the start-of-day chip lead, and while the Hong Kong player managed to fight his way through to the final table, it was Vietnam’s Ngo Khoa Anh who claimed the accolades.

Anh overcame Germany’s Fabian Gumz after a lightning-fast one-hand heads-up match he came into with a three-to-two chip lead.

This result represents a career-best score for Anh, granting the Vietnamese player his maiden APT title, taking his live tournament winnings up to over USD 1.1 million and moving him into the top ten on the Vietnam All-Time Money List.

Gumz, who was also gunning for his first APT title, had to settle for the KRW 173,770,000 (~USD 124,120) on offer for second place.

Jieming Xu rounded out the last of the podium positions, with the Chinese player also cashing for a career-best KRW 127,100,000 (~USD 90,785).

Anh has come close to tasting success in an APT High Roller event previously, finishing runner-up to compatriot Long Nguyen during the APT Summer Series Da Nang 2023.

I once finished second in the APT High Roller event in Vietnam, just missing out on the Lion Trophy,” said Anh following the largest victory of his playing career.

I’ve been waiting for this victory for a very long time. This win means so much to me because, as a poker player, we all go through so many ups and downs. This result helps me believe in myself and motivates me to keep going.”

To all my family members and great friends who have always supported and believed in me — this win is for you. I’m truly thankful for your help and encouragement through the difficult moments. Thank you so much!” Anh stated before heading off into the Jeju evening to revel in his win.
