Fritz comes out on top of a record-breaking field for his first APT title

Austria’s Manuel Martin Fritz emerged victorious from the record-breaking Event #78: Baby Superstar Challenge, returning as chip leader from the final five to capture his maiden APT title and the trophy.

The 119-entry tournament was the second-largest Baby Superstar Challenge of all time and the largest and richest edition ever held by the APT in South Korea, generating a KRW 799,680,000 (~USD 590,170) prize pool. Play had been halted with five players remaining yesterday, with Fritz leading Jieming Xu, Elmer Kalaquian, Weiran Pu and Wengang Wang into today’s conclusion.

Fritz eventually found himself heads-up against Chinese pro Weiran Pu, with the pair striking a deal that left KRW 6,500,000 (~USD 4,797) and the trophy still to play for. Pu secured the larger guaranteed payout through the deal, but Fritz prevailed in the final battle to claim the title and a total payday of KRW 166,930,000 (~USD 123,196). The result leaves the Austrian pro just shy of USD 8 million in career live tournament earnings.

Pu came agonisingly close to claiming his first APT title, with the Chinese pro, who boasts more than USD 4 million in live earnings, ultimately finishing runner-up for KRW 170,250,000 (~USD 125,646). Experienced Filipino player Elmer Kalaquian had been seeking his fourth APT title but had to settle for third place and KRW 88,360,000 (~USD 65,210).

17 runners were paid, with the final table results below:
