DA NANG, VIETNAM, July 22, 2023 – With the APT Summer Series Da Nang, Vietnam 2023 entering its second day, the first of the marquee trophies has been awarded, with Singapore's Chan Kien crowned APT Kickoff champion.

Playing out at the Ariyana Convention Centre – located at the luxurious five-star beachfront Furama Resort Da Nang – just 45 players out of the 317 entries remained in contention for the trophy, title, and a share of the VND 2,767,410,000 (~USD $117,250) prize pool.

All remaining competitors were already guaranteed a VND 15,960,000 (~USD $675) payday, but it was the VND 545,540,000 (~USD $23,140) top prize all were aiming for.

It was Vietnam's Tran Huy Hoang the man returning in the box seat with the overnight chip lead.

Hoang, who was on the hunt for his third APT title, continued to dominate much of the Day 2 action, carrying his lead through to the final nine.

However, Kien began to make his own play for the top spot once the final table got underway, eliminating Thailand's Kiwanont Sukhum in ninth place a level into the action to bring himself into contention.

After eliminating Indonesia's Nicolaus Wijaya in fifth place, Kien found himself vying for the top spot.

As the Singaporean's fortune began to wax, Hoang's started to wane, with Kien sending him to the rail in third place after his king-nine suited outflopped Hoang's ace-eight offsuit with a king appearing in the window.

Kien brought a 3-to-2 chip lead into the heads-up confrontation against China's Yongfu Dong, and after a brief 10-minute battle Kien turned a straight, beating the turned two pair of Dong to claim his maiden live tournament title, and his first APT title.
