Main Event Final Table Set; Singapore's Shixiang Khoo Leads APT's Richest-Ever Vietnamese Tournament

DA NANG, VIETNAM, July 28, 2023 – The richest Vietnamese Main Event in APT history is reaching the business end as the APT Summer Series Da Nang, Vietnam 2023 approaches its thrilling climax.

Playing out at the Ariyana Convention Centre – located at the luxurious five-star beachfront Furama Resort Da Nang – just 48 players out of a field of 675 entries (381 unique) returned to action for Day 3, all guaranteed a payday of at least VND 77,340,000 (~USD $3,250) from the record VND 20,624,625,000 (~USD $866,360) prize pool.

However, it was a place at the final table and a chance to claim the coveted golden lion APT trophy and the sizable VND 3,935,285,000 (~USD $165,280) top prize that was their goal.

It took seven 60-minute levels to prune the field down to the final nine players, with Khoo returning sixth in the start-of-day counts and clawing his way to the top of the pile.

Khoo concluded play with a stack of 5,020,000, which is valued at 100 big blinds when the action resumes on level 26 with blinds of 25,000/50,000 with a 50,000 big blind ante.

The Singaporean player is already guaranteed a career best score, but will be hoping to make his maiden title win a memorable one and go down in the history books as the winner of the Asian Poker Tour's richest-ever Vietnamese event.

However, first he must contest with Japan's Daiki Shingae, who also enjoyed a stellar day at the felt, bagging up the second largest stack of 4,965,000 – valued at 99 big blinds.

Shingae is also gunning for his first major title, and has already bettered his 16th place finish in June's APT Summer Series Hanoi Main Event.

Japan's Shinya Maeda is another player on the hunt for a maiden title, and will be returning third in the counts with a stack of 3,950,000 – valued at 79 big blinds.

Then there is Yu-Chung Chang to contend with. The Taiwanese player is the most accomplished player at the final table with close to USD $750,000 in live tournament cashes to his name, and will be returning with an extremely playable 49 big blind stack of 2,470,000.

The nine finalists are all guaranteed a payday of at least VND 323,810,000 (~USD $13,600) and will return for Day 4, which gets underway at 12:15pm local time on Saturday, July 29, with the tournament playing down to a champion.

The second and final day of the VND 20,000,000 Event #40 Zodiac Classic – Sponsored by Natural8 saw 53 players out of a field of 161 return to action, all looking to claim their share of the VND 2,811,060,000 (~USD $118,580) prize pool.

Thirty of them would be departing empty handed after the sixteen 30-minute levels of the final day played out.

It was Vietnam's Harvey Thanh Hien Tran who returned in the box seat, coming within touching distance of claiming his maiden APT title.

However, the poker gods had other ideas and while Tran did claim the biggest payout of VND 504,820,000 (~USD $21,270) after cutting a four-way ICM deal, it was compatriot Nguyen Hoang Long who claimed the crown and his maiden APT title.

The four left VND 66,620,000 and the trophy and title on the table after the deal, with Long receiving a VND 337,200,000 (~USD $14,200) top prize after overcoming Tran heads-up.

Singapore's Nicholas Chiau took VND 295,300,000 (~USD $12,440) for third place, with China's Haisheng Qiu taking home a payout of VND 495,900,000 (~USD $20,900) for fourth place, with the rest of the final table paying out as follows:

The UK's John Bonadies Leads Double Stack With VND 3.88BN (~USD $164K) in the Prize Pool

The two-day VND 14,000,000 Event #44 Double Stack - VND 2,000,000,000 GTD proved to be the most popular draw, coming close to the current record field of 326 set during May's APT Taipei.

Flight A drew 166 entries (132 unique), with a further 152 (130 unique) joining the action for Flight B, bringing the total number of entries up to 318.

This generated a sizable VND 3,886,596,000 (~USD $163,980) prize pool – almost doubling the VND 2 billion prize pool guarantee.

The eventual winner will walk away with a VND 761,946,000 (~USD $32,120) top prize, in addition to the trophy and title.

It took seventeen 30-minute levels to reach the top 14% of the Flight A field, with 24 players making the cut.

It was China's Jingwei Guo the man to top the Flight A chip counts, bagging up a chunky stack of 1,127,000 with which to make his play for the title.

Guo was the only Flight A players to bag up a seven-figure stack, with Vietnam's Pham Duy Anh his next closest rival, concluding play with a stack of 873,000.

India's Archit Khandelwal rounded out the top three Flight A stacks, with the top ten as folllows:

Flight B, sporting slightly faster levels, played out over twenty-one 20-minute levels with the 152 entries whittled down to a more manageable 22 players.

It was the UK's John Bonadies the man to rise to the top of the chip counts, and the Brit will be returning with the overall chip lead coming into Day 2 after bagging up a stack of 1,185,000.

Bonadies was the only Flight B player to finish with a seven-figure stack, although Russia's Sergei Iablokov came close, concluding play with 945,000 in chips.

South Korea's Junam Lee (885,000) rounded out the top three Flight B stacks, with the top ten as follows:

The eighth of the APT Summer Series Da Nang's scheduled High Roller tournaments – the VND 50,000,000 Event #45 Single Day High Roller - 8 Max – drew the largest High Roller field of the Series so far.

This saw a field of 109 entries comprised of 73 unique players battle it out over twenty-six 25-minute levels, all looking to stake their claim to the sizable VND 4,757,850,000 (~USD $200,530) prize pool.

The field was packed with talent, with notables in the running including Mystery Bounty runner-up Nguyen Thi Bao An, Series High Roller champions Pham Duy Anh, Gavin Flynn, two-time Series High Roller champion Joshua Mccully, APT High Roller champion Ngoc Dai Nguyen, APT Super High Roller champion Julian Warhurst, Chinese bracelet winner Renji Mao, New Zealand's Slade Fisher, and the UK's Grant Gardner.

In short, this was a pretty hefty lineup. With only the top 15 places paying out, there was an epic battle to make the money, with some scintillating poker playing out.

It was Vietnam's Duy Thuc Nguyen who claimed the crown, earning his second APT Single Day High Roller title in the process.

Nguyen, who was sitting piles of plaques, cut an ICM deal with his final three opponents that saw the Vietnamese player lock up a guaranteed VND 747,600,000 with the four opting to play it out for a further VND 126,820,000 in cash, plus the trophy and title.

In total, Nguyen scored a payday of VND 874,420,000 (~USD $36,860) for his victory.

Vietnam's Duc Chinh Tran locked up 749,100,000 (~USD $31,590) and took second place, with compatriot Linh Duong Ngo banking VND 685,300,000 (~USD $28,895) for third.

Fellow countryman Huu Son Pham collected VND 738,600,000 (~USD $31,140) for fourth, with the final table paying out as follows:

Playing out in the early hours of Friday morning, the VND 6,000,000 Event #42 Turbo saw a field of 82 entries (61 unique) duking it out over twenty-two fast-paced 15-minute levels.

With VND 429,516,000 (~USD $18,090) in the prize pool and only the top 11 positions paying out, competition for a place in the money was fierce.

It was China's Peng Yang who proved to be the fiercest competitor, seeing off all comers to take the VND 118,106,000 (~USD $4,980) top prize.

Yang defeated South Korea's Min Ha Kim heads-up to clinch his maiden APT title, with Kim receiving VND 83,970,000 (~USD $3,540) for his runner-up finish.

Japan's Hiromasa Teraoka rounded out the podium, taking VND 54,980,000 (~USD $2,320) for third place, with the tournament paying out as follows:

Another of the Hyper Turbo side events playing out in the early hours of Friday was the VND 4,000,000 Event #43 NLH - Rivers (Individual River Face Down) - Hyper Turbo.

This interesting take on No Limit Hold'em sees each player in a hand receive an individual river card, dealt face down.

The tournament attracted 43 entries (40 unique) who waded through twenty-one turbocharged 10-minute levels in an attempt to claim a share of the VND 150,156,000 (~USD $6,325) prize pool.

It was Hong' Kong's Ka Ho Yan who proved to be the strongest swimmer, defeating compatriot Chi Ho King Lai heads-up to take the VND 51,056,000 (~USD $2,150) top prize, claiming his maiden APT title in the process.

Lai received VND 35,290,000 (~USD $1,490) for his runner-up finish, with Vietnam's Trung Thuy Duong completing the triumvirate and collecting VND 22,520,000 (~USD $950) for third place.

Another of the new Omaha tournament variants making its APT debut, the VND 5,000,000 Event #46 PL Omaha - High - Lazy Rivers (Individual River Card Face Up) sees each player in a hand receive an individual river card, dealt face up.

This attracted a 55-strong field (33 unique) who swam against the current over twenty-five 25-minute levels, all looking to earn a share of the VND 240,075,000 (~USD $10,100) prize pool.

Eight players were successful in their endeavours, with the rest of the field washed away by the river.

It was Malaysia's Hudson Su Seng Wong who took the VND 72,025,000 (~USD $3,040) top prize, defeating Thailand's Lars Hougaard heads-up to claim his maiden APT title.

Hougaard received VND 52,100,000 (~USD $2,200) for his runner-up finish, with Poland's Lukasz Jankowski taking bronze and a third place payout of VND 33,610,000 (~USD $1,420), with the tournament paying out as follows:

Diep bested Thailand's Thitisan Manomaiphibul heads-up to win his second APT title, with Manomaiphibul taking VND 15,400,000 (~USD $650) for second place.
