Korea National Cup Sets APT Opening Event Country Record; Hong Kong's Ki On Chan Claims Title

JEJU, SOUTH KOREA, April 27, 2024 – Day two of the 10-day APT Jeju 2024 saw more pulse-pounding poker action play out at the tournament tables of the world-class Landing Hotel & Casino, located in the luxurious Jeju Shinhwa Resort.

With a total of 12 tournaments playing out, in addition to a wide selection of cash games, APT members were spoilt for choice when it came to deciding what events tickled their fancy.

One event players could not enter, however, was the Final Day of the first of the festival's scheduled marquee events, with the KRW 800,000 Korea National Cup playing down to a thrilling conclusion.

Just 58 players out of the APT's largest-ever South Korean opening event field of 404 entries (268 unique) returned to action, all guaranteed at least a KRW 1,225,000 (~USD 890) share of the KRW 282,153,600 (~USD 205,150) prize pool.

It was Hong Kong's Ki On Chan who claimed the fortune and glory, defeating All-Star Showdown wildcard Hao-Shan Huang heads-up to claim a career-best KRW 55,786,600 (~USD 40,500) top prize and his maiden live tournament title.

The Hong Kong player came into the heads-up match with a slight three big blind chip deficit, but put pedal to the metal to edge into a five-to-one chip lead after some aggressive pre and post flop play.

Down to his last five big blinds, Huang made his stand with J♣ 2♦ after Chan moved all-in on the button with A♠ 3♦.

A deuce on the 2♣ 6♥ 5♣ flop gave Huang the lead, briefly, before the appearance of the 4♥ river completed Chan's straight to grant him the win.

Flight B frontrunner Baiyu Ni narrowly missed out on making a final table appearence, busting in 10th place for a KRW 4,353,000 (~USD 3,160) payday.

Start-of-day chip leader Fei Wang also came close, exiting in 13th place and earning KRW 3,776,000 (~USD 2,740) for his endeavors.

Other notables to enjoy deep runs included Hong Kong's Timothy Yim and Edward Yam (14th and 15th respectively for KRW 3,315,000), former APT Incheon Main Event champion Dicky Tsang (22nd for KRW 2,393,000), Taiwan's Yen-Han "Pete" Chen (26th for KRW 2,104,000), New Zealand's Tae Hoon Han (36th for KRW 1,528,000), Thailand's Kiwanont Sukhum (45th for KRW 1,326,000), and Hong Kong's Alan Lau (58th for KRW 1,225,000).

In addition to boasting the second-largest buy-in on the schedule, the KRW 13.5M APT Super High Roller also offers players the best chance at claiming one of the three coveted award-winning APT flagship lion trophies – should they prove capable of defeating some of the Asia-Pacific's top tournament players.

The tournament drew 67 total entries (53 unique), and while the field was not the largest, the KRW 831,872,000 (~USD 603,900) prize pool is the richest generated for this event in South Korea.

The eventual winner will walk away with a KRW 242,492,000 (~$176,030) top prize – also the largest the event has seen in the country, assuming the finalists do not cut a deal.

All nine remaining players are guaranteed a KRW 24,960,000 (~USD 18,120) payday.

However, it is the KRW 242,492,000 (~USD 176,030) top prize all will be gunning for when play resumes at 11:15am local time on Sunday, April 28.

It is Malaysia's Anson Ewe who will be returning in pole position, bagging the chip lead after the tournament clock ticked into the red at the end of the sixteen 40-minute levels played.

Ewe railed Hon Cheong "Ivan" Lee on the penultimate level played, before crushing Chinese player Song Xue's tournament dreams and bursting the money bubble to conclude the day's action.

Other notables still in contention include bracelet winner Weiran "Kevin" Pu, APT Taipei 2023 finalist Chih Wei Fan, APT Incheon 2023 High Roller champion Thanisorn Saelor, Hong's Kong's Jeffrey Lo, and China's Xixiang Luo, the latter of whom will be returning as the short stack.

Setting South Korea APT country records seemed to be a trend of the day, with the KRW 1M Mystery Bounty Hunter - Sponsored by Natural8 - KRW 300,000,000 GTD drawing a total of 511 entries (297 unique) over the two starting flights.

This makes it the largest-ever APT Mystery Bounty tournament to play out in the country, and also generated the richest South Korean prize pool for this event with a sizable KRW 292,803,000 (~USD 212,640) in the prize purse – with a further KRW 153,300,000 (~USD 111,330) in the bounty pool.

The eventual winner will take home a KRW 57,368,000 (~USD 41,660) top prize, with the 73 remaining survivors all guaranteed a KRW 1,016,000 (~USD 800) payday when action resumes at 11:15am on Sunday, April 28.

This is also when the mystery bounties kick in, with the top bounty coming in at a tasty KRW 30,000,000 (~USD 21,830).

It is Taiwan's Chun Ting Chu leading the charge after topping the Flight B chip counts, bagging up a stack of 728,000 with which to make his play for the title.

Compatriot Kuo Wei Kao bagged the second-largest Flight A stack of 447,000, with Natural8 Ambassador Hua-Wei Lin topping Flight B to return with the third largest stack of 419,000, with the top ten stacks as follows:
