CEBU: THE QUEEN CITY OF THE SOUTH

Cebu, the Queen City of the South, is the Philippines’ oldest city. From a trading port in 1521, Cebu has evolved into the leader in traditional and non-traditional exports with the highest economic growth rate in the country today.

With the traces of its rich historic past, Cebu has been attracting and amusing tourists for years now. Also, the city is popular for having fantastic diving grounds as its 167 islets and islands are hugged by white sandy beaches and other bodies of clear waters.

SINULOG FESTIVAL

The Sinulog Festival is annually celebrated in Cebu, with its main event taking place on the third Sunday of January. For 2011, the highly-anticipated, well-attended festival will serve as the APT Asian Series Cebu’s perfect backdrop as the poker tournament happens from the 10th until the 17th of January.

Held in honor of Santo Niño (child Jesus), the grand and colorful festival is mainly a dance ritual done to commemorate the Filipino people’s pagan past and their acceptance of Christianity—made festive by the participants’ sporting of flamboyant costumes and dancing to the music produced by the artsy playing of drums, native gongs, and trumpets.
